48 Hours In Langkawi With A GoPro.
An extensive group of 99 islands in the beautiful Andaman sea off the mainland coast of northern Malaysia is the picturesque Langkawi, the jewel of Kedah. The island is a part of the Kedah state in Malaysia adjacent to Thai border. Beautiful sets of islands surrounded by forest-covered mountains and crystal clear ocean water, Langkawi is a real paradise for beach and nature lovers.
I recently made a short 48-hours visit to this beautiful tropical paradise as a part of my Malaysian journey. It was a surprise gift for my parents which they were informed just 24 hours prior to the trip only. All along the journey the only gear I had with me was my GoPro. I did miss my DSLR a lot but GoPro turned out to be a real Hero and my life saver.
Here is a photo guide to inspire the traveler in you to add Langkawi in your next itinerary.
What's Ahead
48 Hours in Langkawi-Eagle Square (Dataran Lang)
Popular photo spot with a huge eagle statue perched over the scenic waterfront.
12 meter tall statue of the eagle poised to take a flight situated on the shoreline of Kuah bay is the sight that greets visitors to the island on boats or ferries.
A beautiful view of Kuah Bay is mind blowing from there
Langkawi’s name came from the reddish-brown eagle – ‘helang’ (eagle) and ‘kawi’ (reddish-brown)
Fountains, Buildings, bridges, and park makes it an ideal spot for picture-perfect holiday photos and the perfect place to enjoy your first sunset in Langkawi.
48 Hours in Langkawi-Island Hopping
Ready to experience a speed boat ride and to explore some of the beautiful islands in Langkawi? It is a must-do thing in Langkawi.
Grab your boat from the nearest Jetty to kick start the adventure
An exciting boat ride with 360-degree beautiful views
Langkawi Island Hopping – What to expect:
- Hike to the lake of the pregnant maiden lake on Island of the pregnant maiden
Take a dip in the lake or do some water activities.
- Explore Wet Rice island
Get indulged in the beauty of white sand beaches
- Eagle watching and feeding
Island & The Lake of The Pregnant Maiden
Island of the pregnant maiden – Hills forming the shape of a pregnant lady laying on her back.
The Island is a part of Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest of Langkawi. You need to pay an entrance fee which is for foreign tourists.
Tickets can be collected from the information center.
It’s only a short 10 minute hike to the lake.
Fell in love with the beauty of the lake. There are many water activities and adventures awaiting you like kayaking, paddling and even swimming if you like to! Choose yours…
Paddling a kayak through the deep blue waters of the lake is what I chose. A moment between you and nature only…
Even though only a narrow rock formation separating the sea and the lake, it is surprisingly a freshwater lake.
Be careful of the monkeys there if you have any food in your hand. They are expert food snatchers.
These boats are not just a conveyor, it’s a call to have a love affair with the beauty of Langkawi islands.
You won’t be able to stop admiring the beauty of this place even when you are leaving it behind.
Wet Rice Island (Beras Basah)
This beautiful island in Langkawi is named so because of the texture of the soft white sand covering it.
This Beautiful view of Wet rice island jetty is the first thing greeting you on arrival.
View from the jetty itself is worth the trip
There is white sand on the beach and green trees covering major parts of the Island.
A beach lover’s paradise.
Soft sand beaches and clear blue waters. Who cannot fall in love with such beauty?
Each and every corner is so picturesque.
Time to leave this beauty behind and back to the boat. It’s time to have an encounter with the mighty eagles of Langkawi.
Eagle Watching – Gaint Lion Island (Pulau Singa Besar)
Gaint lion island is a large wildlife sanctuary in Langkawi filled with unique rock formations and mangrove plants. The island has plenty of Eagles, Monkeys, Mousedeer, Hornbills, Snakes, Lizards and Peacocks roaming freely. Therefore eagle watching can only be done from the boat.
Many eagles can be spotted while reaching near the island.
Boat drivers will feed them with some meat and fish to attract them and to give us a closer encounter with them.
Banging on the side of the boat by the driver will alert all the eagles resting on the trees that their food has arrived. Time for them to rush to the boats.
Boats are heading back to the mainland, that’s hurting…
Everyone on board might be missing the islands as I do.
A glimpse of Kuah town back in view and that finally marked an end to the unforgettable island hopping experience.
All those engines which were roaring like some beast out there in the sea are now calm and are waiting for the next set of passengers.
48 Hours in Langkawi – Skybridge & Langkawi Cable Car
Visiting the sky bridge and riding the cable car to there is a must-do activity in Langkawi. I had only a few hours I was left with in this beautiful place but I decided it wouldn’t be the best decision to miss this experience. You can enjoy fantastic aerial views of islands and ride the steepest cable cars in the world and also the longest free span mono cable car.
The base station of the sky cab is situated at the base of Mt. Machinchang. Tickets can be collected from there. Take your seat in the glass cabin with a 360 degree view and let it take you to the top of the second highest peak of Langkawi by the steepest climb on a cable car in the world.
The cable car has two stations on the top, a middle station, and the top station. From the base to the middle station the steepest ascend starts and the views from there are absolutely breathtaking.
The middle station stop is a must to witness to realize how steep actually the climb is and also, to get amazed by the beautiful view down from there of the Langkawi island.
Enjoy the views from there and take some pictures of yourself for the gram! From the first station, it is a short distance only to the top which is the final station on the top of Mt. Machinchang.
En route get treated with the view of our destination station and the majestic sky bridge.
Tropical mountains leading to the beautiful Andaman sea is a sight worth paying for. Enjoy these while you are hanging hundreds of feet above on a cable and sailing towards the top of the second highest mountain peak in Langkawi.
The sky bridge is at a lower level than the top station. So you need to either take the ‘Sky Glide’ which is a glass box going up and down on the rails similar to a funicular or you can do a little hiking through the wilderness of the mountain. Sky glide will provide a direct access to the Sky Bridge.
Note: Climbing and descends on the hike is a little steep at some points and is a bit tiring too.
Sky bridge, an architectural marvel, 660 meters above sea level with a curved walkway 125 meters long will provide shifting perspective for the visitors as they move along the bridge.
A view from the top of the Sky Bridge is the one you should not miss in Langkawi. There are two triangular platforms on either side of the bridge to enjoy the beauty of the Andaman Sea and the wilderness of the mountains below it.
And the views keep changing with every step.
Be brave to step on the glass floors installed on the bridge and feel the adrenaline rush.
Two elevated watchtower or platforms are raised above the cable car station from which we can see the sky bridge in all its glory, also a wider perspective to the surroundings.
The Sky bridge between the rain forest mountains is an amazing view from there.
Tarutao Island in Thailand also can be seen from here.
The floor of the platform is marked with all the four cardinal points and my inked compass also lined up with that pointing in the right direction.
Get lost in the views for some time and do some souvenir shopping if interested. Other than that, there are not many activities to do there.
Lovelock bridges are being established all over the globe and Langkawi is no exception. But the beauty here is that it’s all heart-shaped locks.
Get into a cable car and start the descend once you have enough visuals to keep in your memory.
Oriental village at the base station has some more activities and attractions like 3d art gallery, skydome, or some shopping.
And finally, a good meal from a restaurant in the Oriental village to mark the end of the sky bridge adventure.
Fun facts: Sky bridge becomes the location for many movies including the famous Bollywood movie ‘DON’ starring Sharukh Khan.
Recommendations: Visit during clear weather conditions to avoid fog to cover the beautiful views.
48 Hours in Langkawi – What To Eat & Where To Stay In Langkawi
Langkawi is an ideal place for those who like to have a relaxing time, therefore, a good place to stay is important. Many hotels and resorts are available all across Langkawi for a very reasonable price compared to many other beach destinations. Here are some tips while selecting a hotel in Langkawi.
Always try to book a beach resort or hotel near to the beach because beaches and its turquoise water are the reason you are there.
The ambiance of the place we are staying in will hugely influence the vibe of the entire vacation. So check the hotels/resort before booking and check for images posted by the travelers who stayed there before.
Beachside cafes and Bars are the perfect places to relax after a tiring long day.
Local eateries are available all along the place. Seafood is the best thing to eat in Langkawi. You can try some traditional Malaysian and Thai dishes, which are widely available even from the local food stalls. International fast-food restaurants are also available in the shopping malls and also near the Kuah ferry terminal.
Booking.com48 Hours in Langkawi – Facts & Tips
Best time to visit: January to March is the high season for tourists. It is the dry season in Langkawi with virtually no rain. But the tourist flow will start in October and will last until April. Mostly the weather will be warm with a temperature above 30 degrees during day time.
April to august also can be considered. There will be occasional rain with thunderstorms but are short-lived. The best thing about this season is that all the popular attractions will be less crowded. Also, the islands and the beaches will be very clean and accessible during this time. The temperature will be quite moderate on the beaches. The best advantage of visiting Langkawi at this time is the discounts all the hotels and resorts will be offering. Some of them will offer up to a 50% discount.
September to October is the monsoon season in Langkawi with rough sea. So I would not recommend visiting during this period.
Transportation: The best way to explore the island is on a motorcycle that is widely available for rent. Even cars are available if there are more than 2 people. Even though taxi charges are less in Langkawi compared to Kaula Lumpur the ideal and comfortable way will be to drive by yourself. Car renting offices will be the first thing you will see inside the airport terminals.
Food and Drinks: Seafood is the main specialty of Langkawi as its all surrounded by the sea.
Alcoholic drinks are not widely available like in Kuala Lumpur. So, if you prefer to have some, then check for it’s availability in the hotel you are going to book.
For me, Malaysia is an unforgettable destination because it was my first ever travel to a foreign country as a tourist. And when I traveled here for the second time, it was a surprise gift for my Mom & Dad. That’s why it is so close to my heart.
48 Hours is enough to explore Langkawi? Definitely no. But you will be able to experience most of the attractions with in that 48 hours. So even if you are on a short trip to Malaysia don’t miss Langkawi if you are a beach and nature lover.
Pack your bags to Langkawi and you will never be disappointed.
